2008 Summary
Mens Club
2008 saw the club increase in size again expanding to 8 teams in the senior competition and a veterans team. We continued our on field success with 4 teams making the finals, 3 going on to play in grand finals with our veterans winning in a penalty shoot out.
1st Grade again play in the grand final, only to loose in the last minute of sudden death. The teams moment continues to build as they drive for inclusion in the premier league. 2009 will see the teams depth increase again.
2nd Grade improvement over 2007 showed, depth in the team has improved with 8 draws last season were unlucky not to be in the top 4.
3rd Grade on paper were an extremely strong team. Unfortunately for them a this was an extremely tough division. Towards the end of the season saw a lot of their results turn around from the first round.
4th Grade the quiet achievers of the club. Missing out on the finals in a last 2 rounds, after playing some quality teams. This team just clicked from the first round.
5th Grade you would never know what you'd get with this team. One week they would beat a team by 5 or more goals then the next they'd loose by the same margin. On their day would beat any team, player shortages through out the season let them down.
6th Grade was set aside as the development team, and suprised every body by making the finals. Leading 2 nil with 20 minutes to go, saw an experienced UTS team wear them down to go through to the next round. The team was made up mostly of our 17's players and a few wise heads to guide them around the park.
7th Grade Grumpy Old Men - prerequisite to play in this team, had to be over 35. An experienced team that made it all the way to the GF to loose after the bell in sudden death. We may move a little slower ......
8th Grade A social team with a huge heart - Unlucky to miss the finals loosing only 2 games in the second round. Played by a bunch of guys who just love the game.
Veterans - Our grand final winners, winning in a penalty shootout. 2009 will see us hopefully enter 2 teams, with several of our 1st division players qualifying to play.
Indoor - Our club is fast becoming one of the stronger indoor clubs entering teams from premier though to social indoor.
Womens Club
-
Our Club grew during 2007, expanding to 9 winter teams with an addition at each end of the scale with the U18's and Vets teams.
-
We continued to attract new players at both a competitive and social level
-
We won two major premiers and two minor premiers and in addition we had runners up and finalists across all divisions and comps.
Together these reflected the strength and commitment of our players.
During 2007 we were also lucky enough to take on board the expertise and coachign skills developed by Sports Links International (SLICs) with Liam Dixon coaching our women's first grade. We are also lucky enough to have coaches for all our turf teams.
In addition to the winter grass and turf teams, we also play indoor hockey during the summer and field both women's and mixed teams in social turf comps. Finally during 2007 we arranged a hockey tour for both the men and women's clubs in Fiji and we will be returning to Fiji again in October 2008.
Women's winter hockey
Our U18 team players were the stars of the season. Not only did they win the Sydney North minor premiership, they also sealed it wining the major premier. The girls did not go about it in the easiest of fashions and caused some nail biting moments heading in to extra time, drop off and a penalty shoot out!
1st Grade dominated in Divison One of the North Shore turf comp throughout the year and became minor premiers. Unfortunately arch rivals Mirrabooka once more defeated them in the Grand Final, for the second year running.
2nd Grade dominated in Division 2 through the year only to loose the minor premiership in the final weeks - again to Mirrabooka! Fortunately the team put them in their place during the the final series and went on to win the major premier.
3rd Grade had a difficult year. Due to loss of teams from North Shore, they restructured teh comp and reduced the number of divisions from four to three. As a result or 3rd Grade moved in to Division two. The girls played well and enthusiastically during the season and were not far off securing a final series spot.
4th Grade played in Division 3 and had a stellar year. The team reached the final series after finishing in 4th spot on the ladder. The made it to the Final and played the game with only 8 players! Had the rest of the team not decided September is holiday season - hey we could have had a team in all 3 Grand Finals!
Our Grass ladies had another fun filled season on Saturday afternoons. Unfortunately the teams were split this year due to the developement of Freshwater fields. Manly Red and Green's in Division 2 of the Warringah comp played at Forest High, whilst Manly White's in Division 1 played at Mackellar, Manly Vale. Manly White's made it through to the final series, but got knocked out by the team (Seaforth) who went on to be major premiers.
Out Vets ladies had a successful opening year in the North Shore comp. The spring chickens reached the Final on default after Warringah cheated in the semi-final by brining in players who had not played all season! Unfortunately Warringah's second team got the better of them and they did not progress to the Grand Final.
Women's summer competitions
During the summer we fielded 3 indoor teams in the Sydney Hockey League. This was the second year we had entered a Premier grade side and this year we managed to keep the score lines closer, finishing 3rd from bottom rather than last! In addition we fielded an A Grade side that came 4th and went on to be knocked out by the winners of the comp in the semi-final after drawing 3-3. Our C Grade side had an interesting season and finished 5th in the table. Had they turned up to the right location and on the right time on a couple of nights - they would have made the semi's!
We also entered 3 women's teams in the North Shore summer comp, one mixed team in the Gordon comp at Ku-ring-gai and two mixed teams in the 8-a-side comp at Ryde. All summer teams had a ball.
